Kindles are among Amazon's best sellers in its big sales. Amazon Australia named the Kindle Paperwhite one of its top sellers of Prime Day 2025. Here's how the five current models compare, so you're ready for Prime Big Deal Days (29 September – 5 October 2026).
How we chose: specs and launch prices come from Amazon Australia's own announcements, and Kindle Scribe (2026) prices come from BTTR's Australian launch report. We haven't lab-tested these ourselves. Prices shown are Australian launch RRPs. Amazon changes Kindle prices often, and they're usually cheaper during Prime sales, so tap a button to see today's price.

Best for most people
Kindle Paperwhite (2024, 16 GB)
The one most people should buy, and one of Amazon Australia's top sellers during Prime Day 2025. A bigger 7-inch screen than the basic Kindle, faster page turns and it's waterproof, so you can read at the beach or in the bath.

Good: 7-inch glare-free 300 ppi screen, 16 GB, waterproof, battery up to 3 months (Amazon's claim), 25% faster page turns than before.
Watch out: No wireless charging or auto-brightness. Those are on the Signature Edition.
Everything in the Paperwhite plus the nice-to-haves: double the storage, a light that adjusts itself, and wireless charging. Worth it if the price gap is small on sale.

Amazon's colour Kindle, in Australia since July 2025. Book covers, comics, kids' books and colour highlights look far better, and it's still easy on the eyes.

Watch out: Shorter battery than the black-and-white Kindles, and it costs more.
A big-screen Kindle you can write on with the included pen. Great for uni students who want to annotate PDFs and take notes without the distraction of a tablet.

Launch RRP (AU)From A$699
Good: 11-inch glare-free screen, pen included, 5.4 mm thin, about 400 g, AI notebook search and summaries, Google Drive and OneDrive integration.
Watch out: Expensive, and it's a note-taker first. A Paperwhite is better if you only read.
Just reading novels? The Paperwhite is the sweet spot. The basic Kindle is fine if budget matters most.
Read in the bath, pool or at the beach? Get a waterproof model: any Paperwhite or the Colorsoft.
Comics, graphic novels, cookbooks or kids' picture books? The Colorsoft shows them in colour.
Uni notes and PDFs? The Scribe lets you write on pages with the included pen.
Kindle Unlimited: Amazon's ebook subscription often has discounted or free-trial offers during Prime sales. Check the deal before you subscribe.

Common questions
Which Kindle should I buy in Australia?
For most people, the Kindle Paperwhite (2024). It has a 7-inch screen, is waterproof, and Amazon claims up to 3 months of battery. The basic Kindle is the cheapest option, and the Colorsoft is best for comics and cookbooks.
Is the Kindle Paperwhite waterproof?
Yes. The Paperwhite, Paperwhite Signature Edition and Kindle Colorsoft are waterproof. The basic Kindle and Kindle Scribe are not.
When is the best time to buy a Kindle in Australia?
During Amazon's own sales: Prime Big Deal Days (29 September – 5 October 2026), Black Friday in late November and Prime Day in July.
Kindle Paperwhite or Signature Edition?
The Signature Edition adds 32 GB storage, an auto-adjusting light and wireless charging. If the sale price gap is small, it's a nice upgrade. Otherwise the standard Paperwhite is plenty.
Is there a colour Kindle in Australia?
Yes. The Kindle Colorsoft launched in Australia in July 2025 at A$399 (16 GB) and A$449 (Signature Edition), and the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft note-taker followed in 2026.
