Why track prices?

A "was" price only tells you what the store says. Price history tells you what the item actually sold for. The ACCC says a was/now saving can be misleading if the product was never sold at the higher price, or only briefly before the sale (ACCC guidance). Tracking prices is how you spot that.

1. Google price tracking (works in Australia)

Search for the product on Google, open its product card and choose Track price. You can set a target price. Google says it sends alerts by email and through the Google app when the price drops, and that price tracking is available in Australia. You need to be signed in to a Google account. Chrome also shows price tracking and price insights on some product pages. Chrome help.

2. camelcamelcamel for Amazon Australia

camelcamelcamel tracks Amazon Australia prices, shows price history charts and can email you when a price drops. Its browser extension, the Camelizer, shows the history while you're on the Amazon page.

3. Price comparison and history sites

Several Australian sites compare prices across stores and show history. OzBargain keeps a community list of price comparison sites, and CHOICE has compared price trackers. Check which stores each one covers.

How to read price history

  1. Look at the lowest price over the last 3–6 months, not the "was" price.
  2. If today's price is near that low, it's a genuine deal.
  3. If the price jumped just before the sale, the discount is padded.
  4. If a big sale is weeks away, set an alert and wait.
