What is Singles' Day?

It's widely reported to have begun in 1993 as a dorm-room tradition at Nanjing University in China, for people proudly on their own. The date 11.11, four number ones, gave it the name. In 2009 Alibaba's Taobao launched large 11 November discounts and it grew into one of the world's biggest online shopping days. In Australia it is smaller than Black Friday, but more retailers now run 11.11 promotions, with Myer among them.

What to expect: typical categories

No Australian retailer has announced its full 2026 offers yet, so treat the following as our rule of thumb from how 11.11 sales usually look here, not a prediction:

How to avoid fake discounts on 11.11

Marketplaces and stores love big percentage signs. The ACCC says a "was/now" price can be misleading if the product wasn't actually sold at the higher price for a reasonable period before the sale, or if the higher price is an RRP it was never sold at. Protect yourself:

  1. Learn the normal price now. Check today's price and its history with a free price tracker.
  2. Test the claim. Put the sale price and the "was" price into our real deal checker.
  3. Compare the total. Add shipping and check whether GST is included at checkout.
  4. Don't let the date set the price. An "11% off" offer tied to 11.11 only tells you the discount, not whether the starting price was fair. Compare it with the normal price.
  5. Set an alert. Use price drop alerts so you can wait for your price.

Buying from overseas sellers: what to check

  1. GST: the ATO says 10% GST applies to most goods of A$1,000 or less sold from overseas to Australian consumers, and marketplaces generally collect it. Over A$1,000, GST and duty are generally charged at the border.
  2. Delivery time: overseas orders can take weeks. If it's a Christmas gift, leave plenty of time.
  3. Returns and rights: the ACCC says overseas businesses selling directly to Australians must follow Australian Consumer Law, but enforcing it against a seller with no Australian presence can be hard. See our refunds guide.
  4. The final price: compare the total, not the headline.

Common questions

When is Singles' Day 2026 in Australia?

Singles' Day is Wednesday 11 November 2026 (11.11). Click Frenzy's calendar lists Singles' Day sales from 9 to 11 November, and it notes the dates of such supporting moments have some flexibility. Myer says many retailers extend their offers over several days.

Why is it called Singles' Day?

The date 11.11 has four number ones, standing for people on their own. It's widely reported to have started as a university tradition in Nanjing, China in 1993, before Alibaba's Taobao launched big 11 November sales in 2009 and turned it into a shopping event.

Which Australian stores do Singles' Day sales?

Myer has a Singles' Day sale page covering fashion, tech, home and beauty, and says all its stores take part. A full cross-store list for 2026 isn't published anywhere official, so we don't claim one. OzBargain keeps a community deal list, but when we checked on 11 October 2026 it was still showing last year's deals as expired.

Is Singles' Day better than Black Friday?

They suit different things. Singles' Day is smaller in Australia and tends to centre on beauty, fashion and cheap accessories. Black Friday (27–30 November 2026) is the bigger event for most big-ticket items and starts 16 days later, with early access from 20 November. Neither guarantees a lower price, so check the price history.

Do I pay GST on overseas Singles' Day orders?

Usually, yes. The ATO says GST of 10% applies to most goods with a customs value of A$1,000 or less sold to Australian consumers from overseas, and online marketplaces are generally the ones responsible for collecting it. For consignments over A$1,000, GST and any duty are generally charged at the border. Compare the final price at checkout.

Can I return something I bought from an overseas seller?

If an overseas business sells directly to Australian consumers, the ACCC says it must follow the Australian Consumer Law, including consumer guarantees. In practice, enforcing your rights against a seller with no Australian presence can be slow or difficult, and you may not be covered if goods were sent overseas first and then forwarded to you. For expensive items a local store is usually less hassle.

How do I spot a fake Singles' Day discount?

Find the item's normal price before the sale, ignore the crossed-out 'was' price, and test the numbers in our free deal checker. The ACCC says a 'was' price can be misleading if the product wasn't sold at that price for a reasonable period before the sale.
