Is Amazon Prime worth it in Australia? (2026)
Amazon Prime costs $9.99 a month or $79 a year in Australia. For some people that pays for itself in a few months. For others it's $79 they'll barely use. Here's what you actually get, what it really costs, and a simple way to decide.

The short answer
Yes, if you order from Amazon more than once or twice a month, or you'd watch Prime Video anyway. The yearly plan works out to about $6.58 a month for delivery, streaming and music together.
No, if you only shop on Amazon a few times a year and you can usually reach the free delivery minimum without Prime. In that case, use the free trial around a big sale and cancel.
What does Amazon Prime cost in Australia?
Prime is $9.99 a month or $79 a year. Amazon confirmed those prices in its June 2026 delivery announcement. They haven't changed since June 2023, when Prime went up from $6.99 a month and $59 a year (WhistleOut).
There's one extra cost to know about. Since 2 July 2024, Prime Video in Australia shows ads. Removing them costs another $2.99 a month (TechRadar, Tom's Guide).
| Plan | Cost | Over 12 months | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free trial | $0 for 30 days | $0 | Trying it during a big sale |
| Monthly | $9.99 a month | $119.88 | A month or two at a time |
| Yearly | $79 a year | $79 | Regular Amazon shoppers |
| Ad-free Prime Video | +$2.99 a month | +$35.88 | People who watch a lot |
If you know you'll keep Prime all year, the yearly plan saves about $40 compared with paying monthly. If you only want it for a sale or one series, pay monthly and cancel.
What you get with Prime
Here's what Amazon lists as the main Prime benefits in Australia, and how useful each one really is.
1. Free, faster delivery
This is the big one. Prime members get free delivery on Prime-eligible items, including many items from Amazon's international Global Store. Amazon says most members can get next-day delivery on over a million items.
Free same-day delivery is growing too. As of July 2026 it covers Sydney, Perth, Canberra, Geelong, Newcastle, the Hunter and most of the Central Coast. Orders need to be $49 or more and placed by 11 am, for delivery by 10 pm (Amazon Australia). Some remote areas miss out on Prime delivery, so check your postcode.
Without Prime, Amazon Australia offers free standard delivery on eligible orders over $59. If most of your orders are small, Prime saves you either the delivery fee or the urge to pad your cart.
2. Prime Video
Amazon's streaming service, with originals like Reacher and The Boys, movies, and some live sport. It now has ads unless you pay the extra $2.99 a month. Partner channels like Paramount+ and Apple TV+ can be added on top, but they cost extra.
3. Amazon Music Prime
Amazon says Prime includes access to 100 million songs and top podcasts, ad-free, in shuffle mode. Shuffle mode is the catch: you can't always pick the exact song you want. It's fine for background music or an Echo speaker, but it won't replace Spotify for most people.
4. Prime Reading
A rotating selection of free ebooks and comics you can read on a Kindle or the free Kindle app. It's a nice extra, not a reason to sign up. If you read a lot, Kindle Unlimited is a separate subscription. See which Kindle to buy if you're thinking about an e-reader.
5. Prime-only deals
Prime Day (usually in July) and Prime Big Deal Days (in October) are mostly for members. Prime members also get early access to some Lightning Deals. During Amazon's Black Friday sale, most deals are open to everyone, but some are Prime-only.
6. Two years of DoorDash DashPass
Prime members in Australia can claim a free 24-month DoorDash DashPass. It gives $0 delivery fees on eligible DoorDash orders, plus 5% back in DoorDash credit on eligible pickup orders (Amazon Australia). If you already order takeaway through DoorDash, this alone could be worth more than Prime costs. If you use Uber Eats or Menulog, it's worth nothing.
Is Prime worth it for you? A quick test
Grab your Amazon order history for the last 12 months and answer these:
- How many orders were under $59? Each one either paid for delivery or tempted you to add extra items. Five or more small orders a year and the delivery side starts to add up.
- Would you pay for Prime Video on its own? If it would replace another streaming service, the maths changes fast.
- Do you use DoorDash? Free delivery fees for two years is a real saving for regular users.
- Do you shop Prime Day or Prime Big Deal Days? One good deal on a robot vacuum or TV can save more than $79.
Two or more "yes" answers? The yearly plan is probably worth it. Only one? Go monthly when you need it. None? Skip Prime and use the free trial at sale time.
Who should skip Prime
- Occasional shoppers who place a handful of Amazon orders a year and can wait for standard delivery.
- People in remote areas where Prime delivery isn't available or isn't much faster.
- Anyone who already has too many subscriptions. Prime Video is good, but a show you never get around to watching isn't a saving.
- Students hoping for a discount. We couldn't find a separate Prime Student plan on Amazon Australia when we checked, so don't count on one. Check the Prime page for current offers.
When to start your free trial
New members get a 30-day free trial, and Amazon says you can cancel any time. Timing it around a big sale is the smart move:
- Prime Big Deal Days: the 2026 sale ran from 29 September to 5 October and has ended. See what's next on our Prime Big Deal Days page.
- Black Friday to Cyber Monday: Black Friday is 27 November and Cyber Monday is 30 November 2026. Amazon usually starts its sale a week or more earlier. A trial started in mid-November covers the whole sale and most Christmas deliveries.
- Prime Day: usually in July. Many deals are for members only.
Set a reminder a few days before your trial ends. If you don't cancel, it rolls into a paid membership. All the big sale dates are on our sales calendar.
One more tip: Prime doesn't make every price a good price. Check the price history first with our free price tracker guide, or put the numbers into our real deal checker.
